A Legacy in Every Bottle
Mark and Ali Gilbert
At a local South Australian pub, a coin toss changed history. Mark Gilbert’s great, great, great-grandfather, Joseph Gilbert, lost a bet and had to rename his property from Karrawatta to Pewsey Vale. Joseph made his first wine in 1847, beginning a legacy of viticulture that continues today.
Now, Karrawatta has been reignited with small-batch, single vineyard wines crafted from our three family-owned vineyards in Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, and Langhorne Creek. With minimal intervention in the winery, our wines reflect their true sense of place, showing elegance, complexity, and harmony while honoring the land and its history.

At Karrawatta, we focus on the vineyard first, growing grapes with care, respecting
the land, and letting nature guide the process. Our approach prioritises low
cropping, sensitive farming, and minimal intervention, producing wines
that are a true expression of their region.
